Getaria

Getaria is a picturesque fishing village located along the Basque coast, just 25 km west of San Sebastián. This charming medieval town is built on a steep hillside overlooking the Bay of Biscay and is connected to the distinctive Mouse Island (Ratón de Getaria). Known as the birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first person to circumnavigate the globe, Getaria offers visitors a perfect blend of maritime history, culinary excellence, and coastal beauty. The town is renowned for its exceptional seafood restaurants specializing in grilled fish, particularly turbot and sea bream cooked over open charcoal grills. Getaria is also the heart of Basque txakoli wine production, with numerous wineries offering tastings and tours in the surrounding hillsides. Visitors can explore the narrow cobblestone streets of the old town, visit the Gothic church of San Salvador, and stroll along the picturesque harbor where colorful fishing boats still dock daily. For guests staying at Casa Zurriola Beach - Surf, eat and relax!, Getaria makes an excellent half-day or full-day excursion. The town is easily accessible by car or bus, and combines perfectly with visits to nearby Zarautz beach or the Flysch coastal formations. Plan to arrive around lunchtime to experience the authentic asadores (grill houses) at their best, and consider booking a txakoli winery tour in advance for a complete Basque coastal experience.
